The novel opens in 1995 Honaka’a when Nainoa, the youngest Flores son, falls off the side of a cruise ship, only to be rescued and returned to his mother by a passing school of sharks. At the centre are the Floreses, a family of five that weave their own narratives within the larger mythologies of their native Hawai'i. Sharks is a surreal family drama that functions as its own best argument for the necessity of art. After two months in lockdown, unable to focus on little beyond refreshing the news, I began his book-first out of obligation (I had to read it for work, after all), which quickly turned into deep engrossment. ![]() Sharks in the Time of Saviors(McClelland & Stewart), the debut novel by Kawai Strong Washburn, was the first book I’ve read. ![]()
